“Cowboy, Take Me Away” – Thoughts before Spring Break

Posted by on Thursday, March 4, 2010 in Alternative Spring Break, College Life, General Information.

Three days until Spring Break 2010 officially begins.  This year, I applied and was selected to participate in Alternative Spring Break, or ASB, one of the many service organizations on campus.  My site is in the Grand Canyon, called “Cowboy, Take Me Away

Part of the site description is as follows:

“A protected site, Grand Canyon National Park nonetheless suffers from erosion due to air pollution from coal-burning power plants, and it relies on volunteers to remove non-native species and maintain its visitor-friendly park resources. While camping in this beautiful national park, participants will work with Ranger Todd to protect and beautify the environment.”

A service trip out to Arizona – it should be exciting.  Leading up to Spring Break, we’ve had orientation and weekly meetings to prepare our group of two student site leaders and about 10 group members.

I really enjoy camping, so I’m not turned off by the thought of sleeping in tents or not showering for week.  To be honest, I’m a little fearful of the cold weather and I can’t help but be mildly jealous of my friends who are flying out to relaxing, warm places in Florida and Mexico.   I have a heavy academic workload approaching after break so I hope to return somewhat rested and rejuvenated.

Despite my current concerns, I have heard nothing but great things about ASB from past participants.  I cannot really predict what this next week will bring, but I know it will truly be an adventure.   Read about my Spring Break trip in my blog when I return.
