Why Vanderbilt

The people. I am surrounded by students who come from so many different backgrounds, who are interested and passionate and incredible in so many different fields. They have inspired me to think more deeply about different perspectives and ideas and grow both professionally and personally into the person I am today. More than anything, I have made lifelong friendships that have brought me so much happiness and laughter over the past two and a half years.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

One of my favorite involvements on campus is Project RISHI Vanderbilt, an international student-run nonprofit that partners with a rural village in southern India to implement sustainable development projects. Through this organization, I have been able to develop my own personal definition of service, beyond short-term fixes for long-term problems. By researching and developing sustainable development projects, I’ve learned how to critically think about real-world problems and how to manage a non-profit, all of which have impacted me so powerfully and have really shaped the way I view the world and my own career path.

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

One of my most memorable classes has been Spanish for the Medical Professions. Through this class, I have learned endless vocabulary words to help bridge the language barrier in clinical contexts, but the most meaningful part of the class is the time we spend outside of the classroom serving as medical Spanish interpreters in clinics around Nashville. As a student on the pre-med track, this experience has been so informative and valuable.
