I love Vanderbilt because it has the perfect campus feel, right in the middle of a big city! It provides the perfect mix of college life and lots to do in the Nashville community - performing arts shows, food trucks, live music and dancing, and so much more! Beyond that, Vanderbilt as a community is so close. I've never felt like I've belonged to a more supportive and collaborative community than when at Vanderbilt - whether it's related to academics, social life, professional development, or extracurriculars, peers are always looking out for each other and willing to help!
Describe a favorite activity/organization and why you like it.
At Vanderbilt, I love being a part of the multicultural community through my involvement with the South Asian Cultural Exchange (SACE). We hold cool discussions about the intersectional nature of the South Asian community as it pertains to the Caribbean, the Movement for Black Lives, and diversity within Greek life! Furthermore, every year we put on an event called the Diwali Showcase, where over 1400 performers and attendees all come together to celebrate culture through food, dance, and musical performance! SACE is a wonderful subset of the rich, dynamic, and intersectional multicultural community on campus.
Describe a favorite class and why you like it.
I'm currently in a class called Intro to U.S. Health Care Policy. I LOVE it because I've learned so much relevant information about the state of health policy in our nation, in the context of history, the Affordable Care Act, and the 2016 Presidential Election! My professor is incredible - having worked in health policy for a long time, and even as an advisor in the White House, she offers incredibly insightful information and analysis in every lecture. I feel like I'm learning information that's truly making me a more informed and intelligent adult!
Describe your experience becoming a part of the Vanderbilt community.
The transition to college is most likely always tough, despite what it looks like on the outside. Being from Chicago, it was hard at first to adjust to Southern culture. However after spending a semester here, I too fell in love the Nashville weather, music scene, and vibes! At Vanderbilt itself I went through the typical adjustment process, but after spending some time discovering organizations and spaces on campus that I felt fit with my interests and values, I loved it! Definitely take the time you need to find what is right for you, and don't stick with what you don't love!
