Why Vanderbilt

Besides the academic rigor of a prestigious institution, one of the biggest reasons why I chose Vanderbilt was because of how approachable and relatable the students seemed when I had visited Vanderbilt the first couple of time. When I had the opportunity to have a conversation with my tour guides, my tour guides were not only knowledgeable about about campus life and friendly, but they presented themselves in a way that I was able to relate to. This particular feeling of being able to relate with my tour guides was something I had not experienced when visiting other potential universities. Thus, I believed that Vanderbilt was the right fit for me, and hopefully I will have the chance to have the same impact on someone else.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

One of my favorite activities to engage in on campus are the various cultural showcases that take place throughout the academic school year. Last year, my favorite showcase was the Lunar New Year Festival because it gave me the opportunity to learn more about the culture and history of a student identity group at Vanderbilt that I was not as familiar with prior to attending the showcase.

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

Bodies on Screen taught by Dr. Madeliene Casad is by far my favorite class to date. In this class, my peers and I would watch one movie every week and Dr. Casad would lead class discussions on how characters in movies can reveal complex insights on issues including race, sex, and gender. Plus, I was able to write about Beyoncé's visual album, Lemonade, for my final paper!
