I chose Vanderbilt very rationally with a pro-con list. The medical facilities and research opportunities, combined with the #1 spot as the happiest campus, academic achievement, and an SEC atmosphere sealed the deal.
Describe a favorite activity/organization and why you like it.
My favorite activity so far has been mentoring students at West End Middle school. I teach both chess and strategy because I believe the ability to see moves ahead is crucial to both maturity and career success. With these students I can both teach valuable life lessons and let my wild side out.
Describe a favorite class and why you like it.
My favorite class this semester is called the Collapse of Civilization, taught by Arthur Demarest. This Distinguished Emeritus (twice I believe) professor teaches a class of 8 students and we discuss and debate the collapses of the past in order to understand the collapses of the future. He is considered the "real-life Indiana Jones", doing digs in war zones and excavating Mayan ruins for the majority of the year. Cool.
