Why Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt has the best of everything: City-campus balance, beautiful weather, diverse opportunities, interesting coursework, renowned professors, and amazing students. I have found everything I could have ever wanted at Vanderbilt, and more. I've witnessed my own personal development, all as a result of being on this supportive campus that pushes me to be my best self every day.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

My favorite organization is Alpha Phi Omega, the co-ed service fraternity because I've found so an outlet for a positive use of my time. I've volunteered at so many different organizations and have met many other service-oriented people on campus!

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

My favorite class that I've taken at Vanderbilt was Introduction to Ethics, because it completely changed the way I thought about social issues and about my own life. I thought philosophy would be an abstract topic, but the different scholarly writings that I read in that class taught me to consider the ethical implications of my actions. My professor was also very interesting and invested in my learning.

Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.

After my winter break freshman year, I came back to campus before all of my friends did, so I tried to wander down 21st Avenue looking for some cool restaurants to go to, but when I sat down, I realized how lonely I felt. I ordered some sliders at a burger bar, but while I was waiting, this woman entered, sat down next to me, and started talking to me. She told me about how nervous she was since she was about to meet her boyfriend's parents, and her conversation distracted me from my loneliness. She ordered a plate of fries that would not come out in time, so she paid for them and offered them to me. I initially refused, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. These small gestures lit up my day and made me realize how wonderful it was to go to school in the South.
