Vanderbilt is all about balance for me. It's the optimal balance between urban and rural, between north and south, between serious academics and a supportive environment. The atmosphere at Vanderbilt is that of collaboration and kindness, where students push eachother to succeed instead of tearing eachother down in competition.
Describe a favorite activity/organization and why you like it.
My favorite organization at Vanderbilt is VUcept. VUcept is a peer-mentorship program that helps facilitate the first year transition to college. My work with VUcept has allowed me to meet 18 bright first year students and build meaningful connections with them, but it has also supplemented my professional development as I have been given the opportunity to work in close proximity with a Faculty VUceptor as well.
Describe a favorite class and why you like it.
My favorite class I've ever taken at Vanderbilt was Sex and Society. This women and gender's studies course was around 15 students across all grades, and was extremely discussion based. My favorite aspect of this class was being able to take the concepts we learned in the classroom and apply them to real life situations - I got the opportunity to write one of my final papers about a drag show!
