Why Vanderbilt

I went to boarding school in Concord, New Hampshire, when I was 14 years old. Since I live in Alabama, this gave me a chance to learn about the experience of living far from home at a relatively young age. As a result, I knew that finding a college with great first-year student programming was a priority for me. As soon as I toured Vanderbilt and learned about the Commons Experience, I knew that this would be the perfect place for me! I loved everything about my time on Commons, and I think that Vanderbilt does a really fantastic job of supporting new students during their transition to college.

Through a service learning class here at Vanderbilt, I have had the opportunity to volunteer as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients at a medical clinic in Nashville. This has been an incredible experience for me because it has given me the chance to learn more about the rapidly growing healthcare system in this city while also improving my Spanish skills. Since I am considering going into the healthcare field, this service opportunity has also provided me with valuable observational time.

One of my favorite classes at Vanderbilt was my behavioral neuroscience lab. It was a very small class that gave me a lot of hands-on experience with a wide variety of behavioral experiments. We ran music-based tests on crickets, learned to design and build circuit boards to use in tests, measured the effects of caffeine on earthworms, and even had the chance to design our own experiments based on our interests.

Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.

Living in Nashville has been so much fun because it hasgiven me the chance to see so many different concerts! While the bigger concerts like the Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry have been really fun, some of the best concerts in Nashville can be found in our smaller venues. Keep an eye out for artists coming through places like the Ryman Auditorium, the Bluebird Cafe, 3rd and Lindsley, and Cannery Ballroom!

List some of your favorite books, movies, TV shows, or musical artists.

My favorite books change all the time but currentlyinclude "When Breath Becomes Air," "My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry," "Underground Airlines," and the entire Harry Potter series. My favorite TV shows, on the other hand, never really change because I just watch "The Office," "Gilmore Girls," and "The Good Place" over and over again.
