Why Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt was the first university that I visited that felt like it truly values the individuality and growth of every student that studies here. At Vandy, I got the feeling that I didn't have to know exactly who I was or who I wanted to be to thrive and excel. Vanderbilt puts so much emphasis on the journey young adults go through and truly values the self-discovery and pursuit of passions that college brings, rather than what your major is or your future career. I've been able to pursue all of my interests, from leadership to travel, and have been supported every step of the way! I don't think I'll ever be afraid to try something new at Vanderbilt, because I know there are amazing resources for me to connect with at every corner.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

My favorite activity I've been involved in so far has been leading my house as President and being a part of the Commons Leadership Council. The opportunity for freshmen to have a direct influence on events and programs, develop connections with on-campus leaders, and have a voice in the creation of the  Commons community was something that I couldn't pass up, and it has been amazing!

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

My favorite class this semester has been my Applied Human Development course. Professor Nolan is so engaging and runs around the room with her microphone calling out questions, and our coursework gives us the opportunity to engage with the Vanderbilt and broader Nashville communities through interviews, articles, and research. While I originally thought that being in a larger lecture would be intimidating, my professor and TAs are so knowledgeable, caring, and engaging that I never feel afraid to ask a question or share my thoughts in lecture or discussion!

Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.

My favorite memories exploring Nashville come from discovering restaurants with my friends! Since our meal plan has money built into it that we can use at restaurants all over the city, my hallmates and I try to get off campus at least once a week to explore, eat at a new restaurant, and get to know our new home. Top recommendation: Hopdoddy's for great burgers and milkshakes!

List some of your favorite books, movies, TV shows, or musical artists.

Harry Potter will always hold a special place in my heart as the series that got me into reading, but right now my favorite book is the Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo.

I share a taste in TV shows with my grandma: The Great British Baking Show and anything on HGTV!

Right now I'm listening to Daniel Caesar, Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar, and Hayley Kiyoko, but it seems like I discover someone new that I love every week!
