Why Vanderbilt

I fell in love with Vanderbilt almost instantly. I spent the summer of my junior year of high school interning at Vanderbilt in the KidTalk research lab. I wasn’t even a student at Vanderbilt and faculty and students supported me and encouraged me to get involved on campus. I was instantly attracted to Vanderbilt’s Peabody College of Education, specifically the Special Education program which is ranked #1 in the country. I knew coming here    I was not only going to be academically stimulated, but also in an environment which is community driven with support coming from faculty and fellow students. Having that sense of belonging and being surrounded by diverse people was extremely important to me. Vanderbilt creates an inclusive community of students that are proud of where they go to school while also creating a collaborative environment rather than a competitive one. Finally, the location was perfect. Vanderbilt has access to a city, and all of the many opportunities there, and nature… Nashville and Vanderbilt really have it all!

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

I serve on the programming council of Vanderbilt Intentional Diversity Experience – referred to as VIDE. VIDE pairs students across a variety of different backgrounds and identities together to form intentionally diverse friendships so we can learn from those that are different than us. I love being a part of VIDE because I get to meet people from all over the world and discover no matter how different we may seem, we all have something in common.

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

My favorite class is Education, Society, and the Teacher. I love this class because we get to learn hands on in the Nashville community about real and pressing issues. This class excites me because we identify problems in the community, and then are taught how to be agents of change.

Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.

My second week of college Luke Bryan opened up a restaurant on Broadway, so to celebrate the opening he put on a free concert in the middle of the street. I was only a few feet away from him and in the crowded streets I saw familiar faces of other Vanderbilt students. I had so much fun dancing and exploring the city with other Vandy students!
