Why Vanderbilt

I chose Vanderbilt because it had everything I was looking for in a college. It has a very clear defined campus that is green and calm while also being in a very bustling city. Nashville is an amazing school to go to college in and there are so many opportunities for us right off of campus. It's also a perfect size. It's large enough that we have so many different perspectives and opinions on campus but also small enough that you can always see a familiar face wherever you go.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

My favorite organization is Alternative Spring Break (ASB). I love being able to take a week and really dive into one specific issue and be able to examine that from several different angles and learn about this issue in the context of a city where it's prevalent. I also love how ASB brings 12 individuals who did not know each other previously together and you really get to know every member of your group so by the end of the week you have a whole new group of friends.

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

My favorite class was Children in Families and Schools. The professor was the warmest, most understanding woman who brought in a bunch of experts in the education field to talk to us and give us so many different perspectives. It was also very much a discussion based class where we focused much more on hearing and learning from each other, and the issues we covered in the class really showed me what I was interested in and wanted to do.

Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.

My favorite Nashville music memory is at the Bluebird Cafe. One of the prominent listening rooms in Nashville, it’s a very small hole in the wall looking place. It has been featured on the CMT show Nashville and many artists have performed such as Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, and Faith Hill. Last semester, my parents came and brought my brother to tour the school himself and my mom got us all tickets to the Bluebird.

We were going to see Craig Wiseman, a songwriter who has written for people ranging from Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Kenny Rodgers, Dolly Parton, Thomas Rhett, Bill Ray Cyrus, and Kenny Chesney. He was great but he kept mentioning this younger girl that he had helped out when she was younger and how he was so proud of who she was today and the Bluebird had also oddly mentioned that we had to completely turn our phones off and there'd be no pictures or recording or anytime or we’d be removed. About a third into his show, he informs us that this girl is actually here and she's going to come onstage and sing a few songs with him, out of nowhere he goes “now introducing Taylor Swift” who then proceeded to walk right past the table where we were sitting and went right up on stage with her to all of our gasps and proceeded to play three songs and just talk to us and take us through her songwriting process and what each of these songs meant to her. While on stage Taylor also said hello to a guy sitting in the audience, who happened to be sitting right behind me, which was Tyler Hubbard, half of Florida Georgia Line.
