Why Vanderbilt

I chose Vanderbilt in large part because of the unique balance that it strikes in a number of different aspects. From seeing both new and familiar faces everyday, to exploring a modern and diverse city that still feels like a small town, or getting to watch SEC athletics while getting a top-notch education, Vandy really provides it all.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

The Lunar New Year Festival, put on by the Asian American Student Association celebrates the coming of the lunar new year and showcases Asian and Asian-American cultures through relevant performances. For the past two years, I have been able to dance in Sōran Bushi, a traditional Japanese fisherman's dance. I've never been great at dancing, in my own opinion, but LNYF and Sōran Bushi have allowed me to break out of my comfort zone while meeting new people and learning more about other Asian cultures.

Describe a favorite class and why you like it.

World War II with Dr. Michael Bess. Even though it has nothing to do with what I'm studying, I love the class because it takes an event and time period that many of us know, yet barely understand, and examines the moral grey areas and contentious decisions that came to affect the war and our modern way of life.
