Why Vanderbilt

I chose Vanderbilt for three reasons: academics, city, and community. First, a major factor in my decision to come to Vanderbilt was the fact that it combines the best of both higher education worlds. At its core, it's a liberal arts school where you can study everything imaginable, but it's nestled within a powerful research institution with the resources and people to take you even deeper into your interests. Second, its hard to deny that Nashville is a great city for a college and its students. Great weather, great connections, great food, and (of course) great music make it an excellent place to call home for four years. Last, I knew as soon as I visited campus and spoke with some students that Vanderbilt's community was uniquely collaborative and fun-loving while maintaining an impeccable academic standard. These three aspects--academics, city, and community--are what brought me to Vanderbilt and are what keep me here.

Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.

I joined Vanderbilt University Concert Choir (VUCC) my first week on campus, and I've absolutely loved it so far. In it, I found a diverse group of people with a shared love of music, and together we've traveled to Savannah and Orlando on tour. My favorite performance of ours so far has been at an annual concert called "Choral Prism", where all of the university's choirs put on one big show together.Describe a favorite class and why you like it.My favorite class I've taken so far was called "Economic Demography and Global Health" with Professor Martha Jones. Going into the class, I had no idea what "economic demography" means or how itties into health, but I ended up learning so much about the reciprocal effects that populations, economies, and health all have on one another. Prof. Jones was an excellent and insightful instructor; she even researched a tough question I asked mid-semester and emailed me a detailed explanation of the problem after I had gone home for summer--just to make sure I got it answered!

Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.

I got to see four of my favorite artists (Kacey Musgraves, Maggie Rogers, Yola, and Harry Styles) all at one concert during my freshman year. It was such an incredible opportunity, and one that could only happen in Music City, USA.
