I am originally from California and when I was applying to college I knew that I wanted to go somewhere very different from where I had grown up, a place where I would be constantly exposed to viewpoints and ideologies that would be fundamentally different from mine. When I found out about Vanderbilt: a school with a perfect size, a highly sociable and highly intelligent student body, nestled in the middle of a new and interesting city, I knew that I could have an amazing college experience here. More importantly, I have stayed at Vanderbilt because of the people and the communities who have supported me and helped me grow these past two years.
Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.
The Speakers Committee is an incredible organization to be a part of. There are about twenty of us on the committee and we are given funds each year to bring exciting speakers (ie. Hasan Minhaj, Ashely Judd, Daymond John) to campus and engage the student body in important conversations. I love working with this diverse and passionate group of people and playing a part in shaping every students Vanderbilt experience.
Describe a favorite class and why you like it.
I took World War 2 History with Professor MIchael Bess my first semester freshman year. It has undoubtedly been my favorite class I've taken so far and it is widely considered to be one of the best courses at the school. The subject material is captivating and goes beyond the objective history of "what happened in World War 2" and asks students to grapple with some of the moral complexities of the war. What made the class truly incredible though was Professor Bess's lecture - he is a just a masterful storyteller.
