Vanderbilt gained a top spot on my college application list due to many things: great academics, prominent athletics, a phenomenal location, beautiful campus, and better-than-decent dining. What I hardly expected, however, was how I'd meet the best and nicest people I'd ever encounter during my time here. I chose Vanderbilt for surface-level statistics, but the friends I've made here are the reason I know this is the perfect place for me!
Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.
My favorite organization is the Vanderbilt International Relations Association! VIRA is an umbrella organization for a lot of smaller activities on campus. Between attending Model UN conferences all over the country, writing for GlobalVU, ruining crisis arcs during our high school conference, and attending monthly club meetings, VIRA sure keeps me occupied. During my first semester, VIRA was the place I met most of my new friends, some of whom have become some of my closest pals.
Describe a favorite class and why you like it.
My favorite class so far has definitely been African Politics. It was a class of ten people which allowed it to be very discussion-based and I got to learn from many different perspectives. The best part, for sure, was choosing my own topic for the final term paper. I wrote about HIV in South Africa and got to combine my favorite things about both of my majors!
Describe your most memorable Nashville or off-campus experience.
The coolest thing I've done in Nashville so far was buy tickets to Ron Pope (one of my favorite singers ever) on a whim for $25 the night before the show. It was at Cannery Ballroom, which is a really small and personal venue and my friends and I were an arm's length from the stage. I even caught a guitar pick he threw into the crowd!
