For most of my life, I thought I was a STEM student and nothing more. I prepared myself to go to college on the pre-med track, then go to medical school, and then become a doctor. I didn't have any other passions or goals, honestly, nothing else made any sense to me... until I started messing with a DSLR camera my family had. I absolutely fell in love writing a script, filming, and editing. Whether it be the ability to create a story that can invoke an emotional response or turning imagination to reality, I finally found a passion for cinematography.
I didn't have many opportunities to pursue this dream at home, but when I had the chance to enter a short film competition here at Vanderbilt my junior year, I took it in a heartbeat. Meeting some of the undergraduates and walking around Vanderbilt during that conference made me realized there is a lot more I want to do with my life. It seemed as if students here, regardless of what they wanted to do in life, always had time for balance and to explore their interests.
My thought process wasn't wrong. Already, Vanderbilt prompted me to question and find subjects I enjoy learning and is helping me distinguish passion from prerequisite. I got to take a film class this semester and I'm going to take more writing classes within my time here. I've met some amazing friends that are full of personality and diversity. Whatever happens within my four years and whatever path it will lead me on for the rest of my life, I'm happy I get to live them here at Vanderbilt.
Describe a favorite activity or organization and why you like it.
My favorite organization--so far--is the Muslim Student Association. Being a part of my youth group in high school and coming here to see a thriving one prompted me to continue the work I did back home. This organization will hopefully help me meet people on the Interfaith Council, something else on campus I will definitely join within my time here.
Describe a favorite class and why you like it.
My favorite class will have to ENGL-1240-01, which is Beginning Non-Fiction/Creative Writing Workshop. As someone who never liked taking English classes in high school, even I am surprised that I want to put this here. This class has taught me about the importance of writing, improved my abilities, and the "no-prompt" essays are a ton of fun to write!
