In honor of the holiday weekend and the great Music City, we would like to present the Summer Jams Edition of the OUA’s “What We’re Listening To” series. So kick back, take a load off, enjoy some apple pie, watch the fireworks, and jam out to our favorite summer hits!

Jan Deike, Assistant Director: “Clarity” by Zedd, because it is a very fun song to dance to, and “Summer Breeze” by Seals and Crofts for when I am feeling nostalgic.

Samantha Orland, Inside ‘Dores Blogger: Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi,” because 103 degree Texas heat calls for some old school Avril Lavigne angst.

Alex Hershberger, Student Systems Analyst, The Aquabats! “Pool Party.” The song’s title speaks volumes about why it embodies the ideology of summer.

Sarah Quin, Assistant Director: Florence & The Machine: “Cosmic Love,” because it’s great to listen to really loudly in your car! Also Kanye West’s “Yeezus,” because I am trying to stay young and relevant.

Lindsey Holden, Admissions Counselor: “Anywhere With You” by Jake Owen, because it’s the summer and summer means country music!

Mary Beth Tift, Assistant Director: Emeli Sande’s “Next To Me,” because it has a great beat for my running mix.

Luke Annapolis, Inside ‘Dores Blogger: Miley Cyrus (yes I went there) “We Can’t Stop.”

Jessica Forinash, Senior Admissions Counselor: The Civil Wars’ “The One That Got Away,” because I can’t wait for their new album to come out in August.

Carolyn Pippen, Admissions Counselor: Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift on “Highway Don’t Care,” because the video was filmed at VUMC, and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. I’m also adding Selena Gomez’s “Come and Get It” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” because somebody had to.

Jay Watson, Interactive Project Specialist: Mike Viola’s “Soundtrack of My Summer,” a power pop tune that’ll make you want to put the top down, even if you don’t have a convertible.

Allie Khodadadi, Inside ‘Dores Blogger: Jack Johnson’s “Bubble Toes,” because his songs remind me of summer. I always imagine myself lying in a hammock in Hawaii when I listen to his music!

Harper Haynes, Senior Assistant Director: Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors,” because I like to support my boyfriend in his music endeavors.

John Gaines, Director of Admissions: Young the Giant’s “Cough Syrup,” because the Melodores’ version of this song is excellent!

Ferrell Armstrong, Admissions Counselor: Lynyrd Skynard’s “Free Bird,” because it’s the greatest rock song of all time. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ “Low Road;” Grace is so passionate and it comes out in this song…gives me chills. Jamie Johnson’s “In Color;” unbelievable songwriting, and it just hits home with me.

Adrienne Spraggins, Admissions Counselor: Alt-J’s “Breezeblocks,” because who doesn’t love listening to Brits who occasionally sound like bullfrogs? Bat for Lashes, “All Your Gold,” because she gives me the same energy Florence and the Machine does… girl power!

Cassandra Mychajlowycz, Inside ‘Dores Blogger: “Carry On” by Fun. and “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons. Those are both fun, inspirational, fist-pumping anthems that I have been blasting this summer.

Amy Smith, Senior Associate Director: Anything and everything by the B-52’s… for the summer, how can you not get up and dance when you hear “Rock Lobster” or “Love Shack”?!

Tricia Blumenthal, Associate Director: One Direction, “Live While We’re Young,” reminds me of my teenage daughter dancing with her friends. Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park,” an all-time summer classic about an all-time terrific city (especially in the summer)!

Mary Comfort Stevens, Senior Assistant Director: “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus, because you gotta get your hands up!
