The Most Important Meal of the Day

Posted by on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 in Dining, Food, Freshman Life, General Information.

In high school, I thought the phrase “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” was pure bologna. I would never eat a balanced meal before going to school, and I felt it was not necessary. However, as soon as I came to Vanderbilt, I found myself dependent on breakfast. Even though I started classes earlier in high school, the work here is more demanding, and I need a full meal to help me start off my day. Luckily, I am able to satisfy my needs with the breakfast options offered on campus!

Usually, I will get breakfast at the Commons Center, since I have been living on Commons throughout my freshman year (but am about to leave!). My favorite choices are the waffles and the omelets. Both are made when you order them, and you can customize them with as many toppings as you would like. There are also healthier options for both entrees, such as whole wheat waffles and egg white omelets. A meal on the meal plan consists of an entrée, two sides, and a drink. I usually get oatmeal and fresh fruit as my sides, and I drink either water of coffee (if it is going to be a long day). Commons is just one of the places where you can get a delicious breakfast.

If I am on main campus early in the morning, I will go to either Rand Dining Hall or Grins to order breakfast. Rand is the dining hall located on main campus. Similarly to Commons, Rand has an omelet station. Another perk about Rand is that Sunday brunch is an all you can eat buffet! If you have a big appetite on a Sunday morning, then Rand is the place to go! Another place where I enjoy eating breakfast on main campus is Grins Vegetarian Café (here is blogger Eileen’s post about Grins). All of the food served at Grins is healthy and fresh. My personal favorite choice from Grins is the Nutella panini, a panini with Nutella hazelnut spread, strawberries, and bananas. If you are running late and need to get breakfast on the go, you can go to the Munchie Mart on Commons, the Munchie Marts in Rand or Branscomb, or the Food for Thought Library Café in Central Library. Overall, there are plenty of options for breakfast at Vanderbilt, providing many choices for the most important meal of the day!
