Spring Break in New Orleans

Posted by on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in Alternative Spring Break, General Information, Nature, Spring Break.

It’s that time of year again where I share what fabulous Spring Break option I decided on this year, about a solid month after I went. It should come as not much of a shock to you that this break I once again went on a missions trip with the Vanderbilt BCM. This year, the BCM went to New Orleans, a city I had never visited, so I was extra excited to go.

The city lights!

Visiting NOLA was a really powerful experience–it’s a remarkably beautiful city, but you can definitely still see how it was changed by Katrina. However, the people we encountered there truly love their city and took pride in continuing to restore it. We got to stay at the Tulane BCM, which is right on Tulane’s campus, so in some ways it felt a little like home here at Vandy.

We worked with quite a few service organizations over the course of the week, including an independent alternative school and sustainability center in the Lower Ninth Ward called Our School at Blair Grocery. They’re doing some awesome work, and really encouraged us to use what we learned while there when we returned to Vanderbilt.

One day at OSBG, a group came up to us and asked if we were from Vanderbilt. It turns out that they were the ASB group from Vandy working in New Orleans. They had recognized one of the cars we had parked by where we were working, and decided to stop and say hi! Turns out NOLA is a small world after all.

Overall, I had another fantastic Spring Break experience–it’s always exciting to travel somewhere new and spend my break doing something meaningful with friends. I ended my post on Fall SPOTS this way too–but I’m already excited to see where we’ll go on our next trip!
