Eenie Meenie Minie Moe- Where for Spring Break Should I Go?

Posted by on Monday, March 7, 2011 in Alternative Spring Break, College Life, General Information, Spring Break, Student Life, Traditions.

Its that time of year again. The weather is getting to be consistently nice out, the sandals have resurfaced from the depths of the closet. Its spring break, an integral part of everyone’s college experience, a time of myth to most high school students day dreaming about what college will be like once they get there. Here at Vandy there exists an incredible amount of spring break possibilities for the multitude of experiences desired. I am going to highlight a few of these possibilities, as trying to cover them all will cause me to miss my spring break.

One option, that is extremely popular on campus, is the Alternative Spring Break or Manna service trip. ASB offers service trips to areas throughout the states, while Manna offers trips to other countries. Each year and incredible amount of people participate on all of the trips offered by these two organizations, I for one went to Honduras my freshman year with Manna. We worked at an orphanage, an absolutely incredible experience, and you definitely want to make sure you give a service trip a shot for one of your breaks; you can thank me later for t

And of course, there are plenty of possibilities if you want to enjoy your spring break with less of a humanitarian twist. Through the Rec center, backpacking trips are offered, in fact my roommate is headed to the Grand Canyon for 8 days this break with a group of students. In addition, Nashville’s location is another great advantage when trying to plan for the break. Being only an 8-hour drive from New Orleans and the Gulf shores, scores of students will shack up in beach houses for the week. Lucky for us, this year, Mardi Gras falls on our spring break’s first weekend. Every year, droves of Vandy students make the 8 hour drive south to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras festivities. Amazing food, parades, students from all over and lots of beads, Mardi Gras is always a good call. Most professors try to avoid assigning big assignments for after the break, as they are all aware that we may not have, how should I put this… an “academic” break.

But besides the actual break, which believe me is a great time; I really enjoy coming back to school after the week off and hearing about all the amazing things people did during the break. You hear about different service projects in all areas of Central and South America, and trips to Europe, visiting friends who are studying abroad. You hear about the senior cruise in the Gulf of Mexico, a sort of last hoorah for the graduating class, while hearing about some crazy vacation destinations or road trips that were strung together- each idea seemingly better than the previous idea.

Of course, these are only some of the break possibilities, those that I have run into the most upon return. Your spring break is a chance for you to do most anything, there are trips for anything you could dream of doing, just make sure you make your plans in enough time. Now without further adieu, Canal and Bourbon street are calling my name.
